Why do we kill? In the film WHITETAIL, Dash Melrose’s character Donnie poses the question.
WHITETAIL is about a hunting expedition gone bad when Tom (Tom Zembrod), his son Donnie (Dash Melrose), and Donnie’s Uncle Frank (Paul T. Taylor) walk out into the woods and stumble upon a murder scene.
Derek Presley’s WHITETAIL is a film that unfolds as if Fargo were set in rural Texas. Donnie’s silence throughout the film, presumably due to his mother’s recent death (the catalyst for the journey), adds to the impact of his statement. The film does not attempt to answer the central question of killing, but it does explore the conflicting themes of homicidal bank robbers and hunting’s poisonous masculinity.
Hunting has never been a favorite hobby of mine. Years ago, I dated someone whose family went on a yearly men-only hunting trip and proudly displayed the heads of the animals they killed. Others, I understand, are more interested in the chance to reconnect with nature or connect with it in a basic way than in the hunt. Still, it’s always struck me as a pointless display of toxic masculinity. I’m sure Derek Presley feels the same way.
Tom, the protagonist of the film, does not come across as a hero, but rather as a distant father figure grasping at straws to connect with his child in the only way he knows how: killing animals in the woods. Tom proudly displays his masculinity when they come upon the body of Davey Bottoms (Jason Douglas), one of three criminals in the film who planned to flee following a bank robbery.
Rather of abandoning the trip to immediately call the police, Tom, joined by Donnie and Frank, stays with Davey’s barely alive body to personally take him in. That’s when things start to go wrong, since Davey’s brother Ricky (Jason Coviello) and their mutual buddy Jesse (Billy Blair) are on the hunt for this family in order to recover a bag of cash.
This film has a lot going for it, including a great performance by Jason Coviello as the crazy Ricky Bottoms and a plot that continues to build emotional moments out of people who refuse to express their emotions due to their hyper-masculinity. This thriller is all about the journey, and it takes a fascinating look at masculinity and the issues it may cause.
WHITETAIL is only showing in a few theaters right now. The film will be released on internet, VOD, DVD, and Blu-Ray this autumn.
